Enrolment at Rutherford School
Starting school is an exciting event for children. They have heard about it from parents, brothers, sisters or friends…and now they are eager to begin. At Rutherford Primary School we aim to make the transition from home to school a seamless one.
Enrolment
Once your child has turned 4, and you live in our school zone, we encourage you to fill out an enrollment application. It is very important that the school knows your child is going to attend Rutherford Primary School.
New Entrant Enrolment Process:
Our pre-school visiting programme consists of 3 visits, on 2 consecutive Wednesdays and a visit on the Friday prior to starting.
Each visit has a specific purpose and allows us to 'get to know each other' in a friendly, supportive environment. Parents are asked to stay for the duration of each visit.

Whanau Support New Entrant Foundation Skills:
Often there is an expectation that children are “ready” to read and to write at the age of 5 however, thanks to research on how the brain develops, we now have a better understanding of how young children learn. To help with the transition from early childhood to Kura (school) we provide learning through play. We have provided some information below to help with the transition to school.

- Visit 1 - A friendly member of staff, usually the Deputy principal will meet with the visiting parents and tamariki to participate in an information session, it's a time to get to know you and tour around our school as a way to develop Whanaungatanga.
- Visit 2 - Deputy Principal will spend some time with your tamariki and provide opportunities for them to build connections with other students. There will be some time to ask and answer some questions that you might have.
- Visit 3 - Tamariki visit the classroom independently to spend some time with their classroom teacher and classmates.
- To start our partnership together we would love to get to know your child better and spend some time discussing how we can support your child in their learning and their transition to school. Please phone the school office to make an appointment or we will schedule a meeting time during your child's final class visit.
If your child has attended another school the transition to Rutherford Primary School is as follows:
- Call our office to make an appointment with the Principal or Deputy Principal to visit the school and discuss your child’s transition goals.
- Your child will be introduced to their teacher and will be given a tour of the school.
